Things are going pretty well for seventeen-year-old Joel Suzuki. He doesn’t have a girlfriend yet, but he does have a band, a record deal, and some really cool memories of saving a faraway place called Spectraland a little over six months ago. But then his old friend Fireflower shows up at one of Joel’s concerts and asks for his assistance. Apparently, things are not going quite as well back in Spectraland as they are on Earth. Joel agrees to help. But soon after he arrives in Spectraland, the situation takes a turn for the worse the tropical island’s majestic twin moons suddenly burst into flames, and Wavemakers—the people with the power to create magic through music, of which Joel is one—begin to go missing. Now Joel must solve the mystery of who is behind these malevolent misdeeds before he falls victim to them as well. Could it be the Silencers, a group of angry individuals who are opposed to the Wavemakers’ very existence? Or perhaps another, even more sinister force that no one—including Joel—is expecting…

A wonderful follow-up story to Secret of the Songshell, but I think it would easily stand alone. If you love both music and unusual environments, you’ll love this story of two rock musicians drawn back into a land in need of help. They were heroes in the original, but they have new obstacles to overcome in order to save Spectraland from a new menace (or is it an old menace returned?)

Loved it and look forward to the next Spectraland Saga adventure.

Mystery of the Moonfire Book Two of the Spectraland Saga Brian Tashima 9780615668918 Books Reviews

Really enjoyed the continuation of this story from the first book in the series. I was hooked from the beginning and had a hard time putting this book down. I read in bed at night to help settle down. Typically I read for a bit and then go to bed. While reading this book I was typically waking up with a book resting on my face because I didn't want to put it down.
This is a great book for teens and adults as well. Especially for anyone who wants to get an idea of what it is to be on the spectrum. The author does a great job of describing, through the hero Joel, what it is to live with Aspberger's.
So impressed with how the story is told in a manner where Joel's Aspberger's is not treated as an affliction, but as a super power. Not only is this character a great hero in general, but also such a hero for anyone that lives on the spectrum.
My husband, 16-year-old son and I all have different tastes when it comes to reading fiction, so we were pleasantly surprised at how much we all enjoyed reading Brian Tashima’s first YA sci-fi fantasy book, Secret of the Songshell. There was enough humor, fantasy, sci-fi and mystery for each of us.

When Mystery of the Moonfire came out in late 2015, it had been a couple of years since I had read the first book but I was hooked by the end of the first chapter. Although Mystery of the Moonfire can be read on its own as a standalone story, I do recommend reading Secret of the Songshell first so you can become more connected with the Spectraland fantasy world and the main characters.

In Book Two, I was pleased to see that the main characters, Joel and Felicity have deeper character development and have strengthened their relationship with one another. I do hope The Spectraland Saga books eventually catch the eye of a Hollywood producer because Brian’s magical world would be amazing on the big screen.

If you follow Brian Tashima’s blog at Spectralandsaga.com or have read any of his author interviews, you will know that the lead characters in his book are teenagers on the autism spectrum. As an Autistic/Aspie adult parenting two sons on the autism spectrum, it’s important to me that any fiction novel I read that has autistic characters comes off as authentic and respectful even if autism isn’t the primary theme. Brian’s book is very positive in this respect.

What I like about Joel and Felicity is that even though they are fictional characters, they seem like kids I would have been friends with if I had met them in school. Felicity is a risk-taking sassy, witty tomboy living life with the volume dial turned on high. Joel is loyal, kind and socially awkward yet he is willing to step outside his comfort zone to pursue a passion (rock music) or save the world.

If you’re looking for a well-known author to compare Brian to regarding writing style and demographic appeal, I would say J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter) or Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson). This book should appeal to teens and adults on and off the spectrum who have a dry sense of humor and enjoy sci-fi fantasy fiction.
The Mystery of the Moonfire is a young adult fantasy adventure which feels to me to lie closer to the enchanted wood (or perhaps 1980s style Doctor Who) in terms of characters, than Harry Potter. It's full of strange animals and adventure and danger... and it's peppered with pop culture references.

Apart from the fantasy creatures and green-skinned people, the main fantasy elements revolve around the use of "wavebows" instead of wands to create music-based magic. This is very appropriate since the author, Brian Tashima is a musician.

The other thing that sets this book apart from the rest is that it contains a main character with Asperger's syndrome. This doesn't get in the way of the story but it does give readers with Asperger's a "quirky" hero that they can relate to.

The only thing that I would suggest is that you make sure that you've read the first book (Secret of the Songshell) before trying to read this one as characters and events from the first book are referenced throughout without an introduction for new readers.
