It is the night of Two Moons Passing - An important right-of-passage night fishing trip for Jude, a young boatman who has never seen a woman in his life. On a strange water world, Jude will become a man on his first night fishing trip. He lives in an odd village near the water where there are no women and, very rarely, a baby boy arrives on the beach seemingly from out of nowhere. His village is aging, dying, with little hope of continued survival.I loved this fantasy world!
Jude was not sure of what was to occur the night of his rite of passage. When the boatmen made a catch, Jude was surprised to see a woman emerge from the water. Although her consent is a bit dubious at first, the reader will relax later when they discover everything is as it should be.
This short story is surprisingly plot heavy! The unusual world is described in detail enough to give the reader a sense of environment. Also, the segregation of societies is understood and also explained due to genetic variances. Jude's portion is only a small part of the entire world and his is the more depressing aspect if thought beyond the words of the story. Luckily, the story ended on an uplifting note.
Catch of the Night is unusually good. The short story does not necessarily focus on the characters, but instead centers on the world. Definitely worth picking up this short story if you're in the mood for an erotic story that is very different from the norm!
